Our Department
Front Adult ER - Trauma, High Acuity
Back Adult ER - Abdominal complaints, lower acuity
The Adult Emergency Department at the University of Mississippi Medical Center is the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the state. The department treats approximately 65,000 adult patients annually, the highest patient volume in the state, with an 18% admission rate, 3% of those being ICU. Since the medical center covers all major medical specialties, it serves as a major referral center for the state. The Emergency Department functions to coordinate all outpatient referrals to the medical center. It also serves as medical control for the Central EMS District of Mississippi.
One of three state of the art Trauma Bays
Medical Toxicology was established as a formal medical specialty under the auspices of Emergency Medicine in 1996. This includes an in-hospital consult service, outpatient clinic, and free 24 hours/day consultation service for Mississippi physicians. Clinical rotations are available for resident physicians and medical students. The Pediatric Emergency Department at the University of Mississippi Medical Center is the only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center in the state. The department treats approximately 30,000 pediatric patients annually.
Pediatriac ER
The practice of Emergency Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center has evolved well beyond the classic boundaries of the specialty. A critical care helicopter transport service functions within the Emergency Department to rapidly transport patients to the medical center. One helicopter is stationed on the roof of the hospital, a second is stationed 100 miles in Meridian, MS. A Fast Track treatment area utilizing nurse practitioners helps to facilitate the treatment of patients with minor illnesses or injuries. An Observation Unit is located adjacent to the Emergency Department and is used for the treatment and evaluation of patients with illnesses or injuries that require times longer than a few hours but less than 24 hours.

New technologies have also been incorporated into the practice of Emergency Medicine as well as clinical research. Emergency ultrasound is used in the evaluation of a variety of conditions ranging from early pregnancy to acute trauma. The Emergency Department currently houses three ultrasound machines and has an active curriculum of training for faculty and residents. Impedance cardiography is currently used for noninvasive monitoring of cardiac output in critical patients.
